オチオサム Osamu OCHI 無題

オチオサム（1936〜2015）は、1950年代から2010年代にかけて活動した日本の前衛画家です。福岡を拠点とする前衛美術集団「九州派」の創設メンバーの一人として、アスファルトや日用品を素材に用いた作品から、のちに球体をモチーフとする絵画まで、幅広い表現を続けました。

1936年、オチオサム（本名は越智靖）は佐賀県佐賀市に生まれました。私立龍谷学園高等部在学中に絵画を始め、1955年の第40回二科展で『花火の好きな子供』『マンボの好きな子供』が初入選し、岡本太郎に認められました。同時期、作家名をオチオサムへと変更しています。1956年、同じく二科展に入選していた桜井孝身と二科展激励会で出会い、九州派の結成について話しました。1958年の第1回九州派展では、白い提灯にアスファルトで描かれた『スカナシの顔』を発表しました。1959年には菊畑茂久馬、山内重太郎とともに「洞窟派」を結成しましたが、その活動は長くは続きませんでした。

1950年代末から60年代初頭にかけて、アスファルトを主要な素材として用い、日用品や身近な物を組み合わせたオブジェやインスタレーションを制作しています。1962年に発表した『出口ナシ』は評判を呼び、のちの福岡市美術館における回顧展でも論考の対象となりました。1960年代後半には渡米し、サンフランシスコなどでの制作を経て、球体をモチーフとする絵画へと展開しました。晩年まで福岡を拠点に制作を続け、2015年に79歳で死去しました。

2024年、福岡市美術館で「オチ・オサム展」が開催され、九州派時代から晩年までの作品や資料約180点が紹介されました。同館におけるオチオサム初の個展として、作家の活動の全体像をたどる試みとなりました。

Osamu OCHI (1936–2015) was a Japanese avant-garde painter active from the 1950s through the 2010s. As a founding member of Kyushu-ha, an avant-garde art collective based in Fukuoka, he pursued a wide range of expressions, from works using asphalt and everyday objects to later paintings centered on spherical motifs.

Born in Saga City, Saga Prefecture, in 1936, OCHI (whose birth name was Yasushi OCHI) began painting while attending Ryukoku Gakuen High School, a private school. At the 40th Nika Exhibition in 1955, "Children Who Like Fireworks" and "Children Who Like Mambo" were accepted for the first time, earning recognition from Taro OKAMOTO. Around the same time, he changed his artist name to Osamu OCHI. In 1956, he met Takami SAKURAI, who had also been accepted at the Nika Exhibition, at a Nika Exhibition encouragement reception, and they spoke about forming Kyushu-ha. At the 1st Kyushu-ha Exhibition in 1958, he presented "Sukanasu no Kao", painted in asphalt on a white paper lantern. In 1959, he formed Dokutsu-ha together with Mokuma KIKUHATA and Jutaro YAMAUCHI, though the group's activities did not continue for long.

From the late 1950s to the early 1960s, he used asphalt as a primary material, producing objects and installations that combined everyday and familiar items. "Deguchi Nashi", presented in 1962, drew notice and later became a subject of scholarly discussion at a retrospective at the Fukuoka Art Museum. In the late 1960s, he traveled to the United States and, after working in San Francisco and elsewhere, shifted toward paintings with spherical motifs. He continued to work in Fukuoka through his later years and died in 2015 at the age of 79.

In 2024, the Fukuoka Art Museum presented the exhibition "Osamu OCHI", featuring approximately 180 works and archival materials from his Kyushu-ha period through his late career. It was the museum's first solo exhibition devoted to OCHI and traced the full arc of his practice.
