吉田 稔郎 Toshio YOSHIDA 増殖のパターン No.34

吉田稔郎（1928〜1997）は、具体美術協会の創立メンバーとして活動した作家です。絵筆を使わない作品づくりを得意とし、板を焦がしたり、水やり用の如露で絵具を流したり、泡を用いるなど、多様な手法を模索しながら制作を続けました。具体美術協会では記録や会計、連絡などの事務局も担い、吉原治良の秘書役も兼ねました。

吉田は兵庫県神戸市に生まれました。1953年より吉原治良に師事し、自由美術協会展、ゲンビ展などに出品します。1954年の具体美術協会結成に参加し、第1回展から第21回展まで毎回出品しました。初期には空気銃で画面に穴をあけたり、半田ごてや炭火で板に焦げ目をつけた作品を制作し、『作品（54-28）』（1954年）はその一例です。同年の『赤』ではロープを取り入れ、1955年頃からは太い一筆の油彩を画面に置く作品も手がけ、『作品（56-12）』（1956年）などがあります。1956年の第2回具体美術展では如露を用いた描法を採用しています。当初多く見られた飛沫が散る画面から、凹凸の強いマチエールを重ねる表現へと移りました。

1965年の第15回具体美術協会展以後は、洗剤の泡やウレタンフォームを用いた作品を発表し、代表作『Foam A』（1965年）などを残しています。1970年に開催された日本万国博覧会における「具体美術まつり」にも参加し、協会には1972年まで在籍しました。吉原製油株式会社（現在のJ-オイルミルズ）に勤務しながら制作を続け、1997年に死去しています。大阪中之島美術館には「吉田稔郎旧蔵資料」が収蔵されており、具体美術協会の活動記録をみることができます。

Toshio YOSHIDA (1928–1997) was an artist who took part as a founding member of the Gutai Art Association. He was skilled at making work without a paintbrush and continued to work while exploring a range of methods, including scorching boards, pouring paint from a watering can (joro), and using foam. At the Gutai Art Association he also handled secretariat work such as records, accounts, and correspondence, and served as secretary to Jiro YOSHIHARA.

Yoshida was born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. From 1953 he studied under Jiro YOSHIHARA and exhibited at the Free Artists Association exhibition, the Genbi exhibition, and elsewhere. He took part in the founding of the Gutai Art Association in 1954 and exhibited in every exhibition from the 1st through the 21st. In his early work he made pieces in which he punctured the picture surface with an air gun or scorched boards with a soldering iron or charcoal fire; Work (54-28) (1954) is one example. In Red, of the same year, he introduced rope, and from around 1955 he also made works in which a single thick stroke of oil paint is laid on the surface, including Work (56-12) (1956). At the 2nd Gutai Art Exhibition in 1956 he adopted a method of painting with a watering can. From surfaces on which spatters were often scattered at first, he moved toward an expression that layered strongly uneven matière.

After the 15th Gutai Art Association Exhibition in 1965, he presented works using detergent foam and urethane foam, leaving pieces such as the representative work Foam A (1965). He also took part in the “Gutai Art Festival” at the Japan World Exposition (Expo ’70) held in 1970 and remained a member of the association until 1972. He continued to work while employed at Yoshihara Oil Mill Co., Ltd. (now J-Oil Mills, Inc.) and died in 1997. The Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, holds the “Toshio Yoshida collection,” where records of Gutai Art Association activities can be seen.
