山口長男（1902〜1983）は洋画家です。戦前から非具象表現に取り組みんだ、日本の抽象絵画におけるパイオニアの一人です。

1902年、韓国ソウル市に生まれた山口は、中学生の頃から水彩画に親しみました。1921年に上京し、本郷洋画研究所に通うようになりました。翌年には川端画学校でも学び、東京美術学校西洋画科に入学後は和田英作（1874〜1959）の指導を受けました。1927年に同校を卒業すると、同期生の岡田謙三（1902〜1982）や荻須高徳（1901〜1986）らと「上杜会（じょうとかい）」を結成し、同年、荻須とフランスへ渡りました。パリでは佐伯祐三（1898〜1928）の制作姿勢に刺激を受け、佐伯の没後は彫刻家のオシップ・ザッキン（1890〜1967）のアトリエに通い、立体派風の作品を制作しています。1931年に帰国後、二科展に出品し、東京国立近代美術館所蔵の『池』（1936年）など、抽象的な作風の作品を残しています。1938年には二科会会友に推挙されるとともに、吉原治良（1905〜1972）や桂ゆき（1913〜1991）らと九室会を結成しました。

戦後は再建された二科会の会員として活動し、1953年には日本アブストラクト・アート・クラブの創立に参加します。1955年のサンパウロ・ビエンナーレ、1956年のヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレなど国際展にも出品し、東京国立近代美術館所蔵の『構成』（1955年）や『転』（1961年）は、限られた色数で形象と構成を追った戦後の画面の一例です。

山口は色彩の数を抑えながら、形象やその構成を徹底的に追求しました。有機性と温かみを帯びた彼独自の抽象世界は、黒地に黄土色や赤茶色で色面を描いた初期から、形や組み合わせを多様に変化させていったその後の作品に至るまで、一貫して展開されています。1983年、80歳で死去しています。

Takeo YAMAGUCHI (1902–1983) was a Western-style painter. Working in nonfigurative expression from before the war, he was one of the pioneers of abstract painting in Japan.

Born in 1902 in what is now Seoul, South Korea, Yamaguchi took up watercolor painting while still in middle school. In 1921 he moved to Tokyo and began attending the Hongō Western Painting Institute. The following year he also studied at the Kawabata Painting School, and after entering the Department of Western Painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts he studied under Eisaku WADA (1874–1959). Upon graduating in 1927, he formed the Jōtokai with classmates including Kenzo OKADA (1902–1982) and Takanori OGISU (1901–1986), and that same year went to France with Ogisu. In Paris he was stimulated by the working attitude of Yuzo SAEKI (1898–1928), and after Saeki’s death he attended the studio of the sculptor Ossip Zadkine (1890–1967), producing Cubist-inflected works. After returning to Japan in 1931, he exhibited at the Nika Exhibition and left abstract works such as Pond (1936), in the collection of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. In 1938 he was elected an associate member of the Nika Association and, together with artists including Jiro YOSHIHARA (1905–1972) and Yuki KATSURA (1913–1991), founded the Kyūshitsu-kai (Room Nine Society).

After the war he was active as a member of the reestablished Nika Association, and in 1953 he took part in founding the Japan Abstract Art Club. He also exhibited in international exhibitions such as the São Paulo Biennale in 1955 and the Venice Biennale in 1956. Composition (1955) and Turn (1961), both in the collection of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, are examples of his postwar pictures, in which he pursued form and composition with a limited number of colors.

Yamaguchi thoroughly pursued form and its composition while restraining the number of colors. His distinctive abstract world, marked by an organic quality and warmth, unfolds consistently from early works in which color planes of ochre and reddish brown are painted on a black ground through later works in which shapes and combinations change in many ways. He died in 1983 at the age of eighty.
