江田豊（1931〜2019）は、抽象絵画を中心に制作する画家です。熊本における近現代美術の文脈で知られ、独立美術協会のメンバーとして活動しました。キャンバスだけでなく大判の和紙も支持体として使い、油彩、水彩、油性インク、コラージュを重ねることで、形と色面の関係を試す表現を続けました。

江田は1931年に熊本で生まれました。19歳のときに洋画家である海老原喜之助に才能を認められ、画家としての活動をスタートしました。独立美術協会への出品を中心に活動し、経済発展するに伴い失われた「日本の濃い闇」の美しさを表現しました。1960年代の『碑』（1960年、府中市美術館所蔵）は初期の代表作であり、油彩に石膏を加えることで、画面に厚みと起伏を与えています。1980年代以降の『象（かたち）』シリーズでは、大判の和紙上に油性インクとコラージュを重ね、層状の色面のなかに形を立ち上げる作品です。1990年代以降も同系列の作例がみられ、抽象の軌跡が年代を超えて続いていることがうかがえます。

2004年、熊本県立美術館の「江田豊展：画業50年/象・その抽象の軌跡」では、油彩やドローイング約70点で制作の歩みが振り返られ、「象（かたち）」シリーズを軸にした現代抽象の回顧展として紹介されました。同年、多摩市では「江田豊：光のうちとそと」も開催されています。作品は熊本市現代美術館、府中市美術館など各地に所蔵され、2006年の熊本市現代美術館「アルス・クマモト－熊本力の現在」にも出展しました。2019年に亡くなりました。

Yutaka EDA (1931–2019) was a painter who worked primarily in abstract painting. He is known within the context of modern and contemporary art in Kumamoto and was active as a member of the Independent Art Association. Working on canvas as well as large sheets of Japanese paper, he continued to explore form and fields of color by layering oil paint, watercolor, oil-based ink, and collage.

EDA was born in Kumamoto in 1931. At the age of nineteen, the Western-style painter Kinosuke EBIHARA recognized his talent, and he began his career as an artist. He focused on exhibiting with the Independent Art Association and expressed the beauty of what he called the "deep darkness of Japan," lost amid economic development. "Monument" (1960, collection of the Fuchu Art Museum) is an early representative work from the 1960s. By adding plaster to oil paint, Eda gave the surface thickness and relief. In the "Form (katachi)" series from the 1980s onward, he layered oil-based ink and collage on large sheets of Japanese paper, raising forms within stratified fields of color. Works from the same series appear from the 1990s onward as well, suggesting a trajectory of abstraction that continued across decades.

In 2004, the Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art presented "Yutaka Eda: Fifty Years of Painting / Form: Trajectories of Abstraction," a retrospective of some seventy oil paintings and drawings that surveyed his career and introduced his work as a review of modern abstraction centered on the "Form (katachi)" series. That same year, "Yutaka Eda: Light Inside and Outside" was held in Tama. His works are held in collections including the Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, and the Fuchu Art Museum, and he was included in "Ars Kumamoto: The Present Force of Kumamoto" at the Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, in 2006. He died in 2019.
