前田 常作 Josaku MAEDA 勧想マンダラ図シリーズ

前田常作（1926〜2007）は、曼荼羅を手がかりに抽象絵画と版画を制作した作家です。初期のシュルレアリスム的表現から、パリ滞在を経て曼荼羅を意識した表現へ、さらに宇宙や悠久のイメージへと、作風を変えながら制作を続けました。

富山に生まれた前田は、1949年に武蔵野美術学校西洋画科に入学すると、清水多嘉示や三雲祥之助に学びます。1953年に卒業したのち、制作者懇談会に参加し、1955年には自由美術家協会会員に推挙されました。同年、瀧口修造の推薦によりタケミヤ画廊で初個展を開いています。1957年、第1回アジア青年美術展で大賞を受け、翌1958年にパリへ渡りました。滞在中、コンスタンティ・ジェレンスキー（批評家）により作品を「マンダラ」と評されたことを契機に、密教図像の研究をすすめると、以降は曼荼羅を意識した制作へ向かいます。1962年からは『人間誕生』シリーズに着手し、新潟県立近代美術館所蔵の『人間誕生 no.6』（1962〜1963年）などを残しています。1963年には一時帰国し、東寺の両界曼荼羅に触れました。

70年代に帰国した後も精力的に制作を続け、『観想マンダラ図シリーズ』などを制作しています。1979年からは西国三十三所の巡礼に取り組み、1988年にはリトグラフ集『西国巡礼』を刊行しました。のちに坂東、秩父を含む日本百観音の版画も手がけています。京都市立芸術大学、武蔵野美術大学で教鞭をとり、のちに武蔵野美術大学学長を務めています。2007年、81歳で死去しました。

Josaku MAEDA (1926–2007) was an artist who made abstract paintings and prints with the mandala as a point of departure. He continued to work through shifts in style, moving from early Surrealist expression, through a period in Paris toward work conscious of the mandala, and further toward images of the cosmos and of eternity.

Born in Toyama, Maeda entered the Department of Western Painting at Musashino Art School in 1949 and studied with Takaji SHIMIZU and Shonosuke MIKUMO. After graduating in 1953, he joined the Seisakusha Kondankai and in 1955 was elected a member of the Free Artists Association (Jiyū Bijutsuka Kyōkai). That same year, on the recommendation of Shuzo TAKIGUCHI, he held his first solo exhibition at Takemiya Gallery. In 1957 he received the Grand Prize at the 1st Asian Young Artists Exhibition and in 1958 went to Paris. During his stay there, after the critic Konstanty Jeleński described his work as a “mandala,” he pursued the study of esoteric Buddhist iconography and thereafter turned to work conscious of the mandala. From 1962 he began the Human Birth series, leaving works such as Human Birth no. 6 (1962–1963), in the collection of the Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art. In 1963 he returned temporarily to Japan and encountered the Ryōkai Mandala at Tō-ji.

After returning to Japan in the 1970s, he continued to work vigorously, producing series such as the Contemplation Mandala series. From 1979 he undertook pilgrimages to the Thirty-three Temples of the Saigoku Kannon circuit and in 1988 published the lithograph portfolio Saigoku Pilgrimage. He later also produced prints on Japan’s One Hundred Kannon, including the Bandō and Chichibu circuits. He taught at Kyoto City University of Arts and Musashino Art University, and later served as president of Musashino Art University. He died in 2007 at the age of eighty-one.
