ロイ・リキテンスタイン（1923〜1997）は、アンディ・ウォーホルと並びポップアートを代表する作家として知られます。太い輪郭線と原色を用いた平坦な面、そして「ベンデイドット（網点）」を用いた陰影表現が特徴で、1960年代のポップアートを牽引しました。

リキテンスタインは1923年にニューヨークで生まれ、オハイオ州立大学美術学部で学びました。大学卒業後は講師や製図工をしながら、抽象表現を模索しました。1960年代になり、新聞広告やアメリカンコミックの一場面を手がかりに、漫画的表現を取り入れた作品の制作を始めます。以降、モダニズムにも通じる漫画的表現は彼の代名詞となりました。

1960年代初頭の『Girl with Ball』（1961年）は、ペンシルベニアのリゾート広告を基にした油彩作品で、ザ・ミュージアム・オブ・モダン・アート（MoMA）に所蔵されています。漫画的な構図が際立つ『Drowning Girl』（1963年）は、吹き出しと涙の描写を画面いっぱいに配した油彩で、同館に所蔵されています。版画では、滋賀県立美術館所蔵の『泣く女』（1963年）のように、オフセットリトグラフで線と色を簡潔に整理した作品も手がけました。1970年代には、大阪中之島美術館所蔵の『ピカソのいる静物（『ピカソ頌』）』（1973年）のように、近代絵画への言及を含む静物のリトグラフも制作しています。

リキテンスタインは絵画と版画の双方において、大衆文化を絵画の文法へ組み替える試みを続けました。その作品は高い人気を誇り、現在でも高額で取引されることの多い作家のひとりです。彼の作品は上述のMoMAのほか、日本の美術館にも多く所蔵されています。1997年、ニューヨークで死去しました。

Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997) is known, alongside Andy Warhol, as an artist who represents Pop art. His work is characterized by thick outlines, flat planes in primary colors, and shading rendered with Ben-Day dots (halftone dots), and he helped shape Pop art in the 1960s.

Lichtenstein was born in New York in 1923 and studied at the College of Fine Arts at Ohio State University. After graduating, he worked as a teacher and draftsman while exploring abstract expression. In the 1960s, he began making works that drew on newspaper advertisements and single panels from American comics, incorporating a comic-book visual language. From then on, this comic-inflected approach—linked to modernist painting—became his hallmark.

"Girl with Ball" (1961), from the early 1960s, is an oil painting based on a resort advertisement in Pennsylvania and is in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). "Drowning Girl" (1963), with its emphatically comic composition, is an oil painting that fills the canvas with a speech balloon and tears; it is also held by MoMA. In printmaking, he produced works such as "Crying Girl" (1963) in the collection of the Shiga Prefectural Museum of Art, an offset lithograph that pares line and color to essentials. In the 1970s, he also made lithographs of still lifes that reference modern painting, as in "Still Life with Picasso, from Homage to Picasso" (1973), held by the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka.

Lichtenstein continued, in both painting and printmaking, to rework the imagery of mass culture into the terms of painting. His work remains widely popular and is often traded at high prices. In addition to MoMA, his works are held in numerous museums in Japan. He died in New York in 1997.
