ミズテツオ Tetsuo MIZU 作品

ミズテツオ（1944〜2025）は、日本の抽象画家です。「国際信号旗」から着想を得た幾何学的な抽象絵画で知られ、1970年代後半から「フラッグ」シリーズを軸に、国内およびヨーロッパを中心に活動しました。

1944年、東京都に生まれたミズが画家を志したのは、1967年にアメデオ・モディリアーニ（1884〜1920）の作品と出会い、彼を生涯の師と決めたことに端を発します。1971年より武蔵野美術学園で絵画を学び、1975年に自由美術展の会員となりました。1983年から約2年半イタリアに滞在したのち、船舶間のコミュニケーションに用いられる「国際信号旗」のモチーフを組み合わせた抽象絵画「フラッグ」シリーズを発表します。このシリーズは、細い線で区切られたマットな画面と、信号旗由来の幾何学的な意匠が特徴です。抽象画でありながら繊細な抒情性を帯び、ミズが敬愛したモディリアーニや竹久夢二の影響もうかがえます。浮世絵や花札を思わせるマットな質感は、船上ではためく旗のイメージと結びつき、独自の画面を形づくりました。府中市美術館所蔵の油彩『木のある風景』（1980年）は、1980年代の制作の一例です。

1980年代から1990年代にかけて、ミズはイタリアやフランス、スペインなどで個展を重ね、1987年にはローマ近郊サンタ・アンナ教会のステンドグラス制作を手がけました。1994年にはパリ・シャイヨー宮海洋博物館で個展を開き、1998年には長野冬季オリンピックフィギュアスケート会場「ホワイトリング」入口ホール正面に全長32メートルの陶壁画を制作しています。作品は府中市美術館、軽井沢ニューアートミュージアムほか国内外の施設に所蔵されています。晩年まで旺盛な創作活動を継続していましたが、2025年に死去しました。

Mizu Tetsuo (1944–2025) was a Japanese abstract painter. He is known for geometric abstract painting inspired by international maritime signal flags, and from the late 1970s onward he worked chiefly through his "Flag" series, with activity centered in Japan and Europe.

Born in Tokyo in 1944, Mizu resolved to become a painter after encountering the work of Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) in 1967 and choosing him as a lifelong mentor. From 1971 he studied painting at Musashino Art School, and in 1975 he became a member of the Free Art Exhibition (Jiyū Bijutsu-ten). After living in Italy for roughly two and a half years from 1983, he presented his "Flag" series of abstract paintings combining motifs drawn from signal flags used in communication between ships. The series is characterized by matte surfaces divided by fine lines and geometric designs derived from signal flags. Though abstract, the paintings carry a delicate lyricism, and the influence of Modigliani and Takehisa Yumeji, whom Mizu admired, is evident. A matte quality reminiscent of ukiyo-e and hanafuda cards merges with the image of flags billowing at sea to shape a distinctive pictorial world. The oil painting "Landscape with Trees" (1980), in the collection of the Fuchu Art Museum, is one example of his work from the 1980s.

From the 1980s through the 1990s, Mizu held solo exhibitions in Italy, France, Spain, and elsewhere. In 1987 he produced stained glass for St. Anna Church near Rome. In 1994 he held a solo exhibition at the Musée de la Marine at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, and in 1998 he created a 32-meter ceramic mural on the front wall of the entrance hall at the White Ring figure-skating venue for the Nagano Winter Olympics. His works are held by the Fuchu Art Museum, the Karuizawa New Art Museum, and other institutions in Japan and abroad. He remained prolific through his later years but died in 2025.
