Serge POLIAKOFF (1900–1969) was an abstract painter born in Moscow in the Russian Empire and active mainly in France. He is a leading figure in postwar French abstract painting (lyrical abstraction), known for compositions built from color and form.
The colors of icons (religious paintings) he saw in churches as a child became an early formative experience. After the Russian Revolution of 1917 he went into exile, supporting himself as a guitarist while traveling from place to place. From his arrival in Paris in 1923 he continued a life of performing at night and studying painting by day. In the mid-1930s, seeing ancient Egyptian wooden sarcophagi at the British Museum in London gave him a strong impetus, and he moved toward treating color itself as his subject and building surfaces by layering color.
Back in Paris, Poliakoff deepened his contact with Wassily Kandinsky, Robert Delaunay, and Sonia Delaunay, and shifted his interest from figuration to abstraction. He held his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1945 and received the Kandinsky Prize in 1947. In the 1950s he was able to devote himself fully to painting. In 1962 he became a French citizen, and in 1966 he won the grand prize at the Menton Biennale, an international art exhibition in France, establishing his place among the leading abstract painters of the postwar École de Paris.
Among his representative works are the oil painting Abstract Composition (1956), held by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and Red and Black Composition (1968), held by the Fukuoka Art Museum. The Utsunomiya Museum of Art also holds prints such as Composition in Rose (1959). Until his death in Paris in 1969, he continued to explore the relationship between color and form in both oil painting and printmaking.
