Karl Blossfeldt (1865–1932) was a German photographer and sculptor known for precise close-up photographs of plants. He refined his photographic technique while documenting botanical specimens and became one of the leading figures of New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit).
Blossfeldt was born in 1865 in Schielo, Germany (now part of Harzgerode). From 1881 he studied sculpture and iron casting at a foundry in Mägdesprung, a town known for ironworking, and later studied illustration at the school of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin. Beginning in 1890 he studied under Moritz Meurer, known as a painter and designer, and began collecting and photographing botanical specimens. From 1898 he also took up a teaching post.
By building his own cameras and working at magnifications of about thirty times, among other methods, Blossfeldt left roughly 6,000 photographs. He emphasized scientific accuracy, avoided soft focus and manipulation, and focused on geometric patterns that appear in nature. The photographs he made for Meurer and those he made while teaching came to be recognized for their artistic value only when Blossfeldt was in his sixties. In 1926 the dealer Karl Nierendorf organized an exhibition of Blossfeldt’s work, the first time it was shown to the general public. In 1928 he published his first photobook, Urformen der Kunst, and in 1932 he issued a sequel, Wundergarten der Natur.
Blossfeldt is regarded as a pioneer of close-up photography and continues to be highly esteemed. His works are held by institutions including the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. He died in Berlin in 1932.
