武蔵 篤彦 Atsuhiko MUSASHI BEYOND MARKS 1-4

武蔵は1952年に京都府で生まれ、現在は同地に在住しています。1977年にワシントン大学美術学部を卒業後、1979年にサンフランシスコ・アート・インスティテュートの大学院にて修士号（M.F.A.）を取得しました。1988年に、教育者として京都精華大学の版画専攻に着任し、2001年からは芸術学部造形学科の教授として33年間にわたり後進の指導にあたりました。同大学では版画専攻の通称「リトゼミ」を主宰し、リトグラフを中心とした平版画技法からミクストメディアまでを展開する学生たちに多くの影響を与えています。現在は同大学の名誉教授を務める傍ら、日本版画協会や日本美術家連盟の会員としても活動しています。

自身の作家活動としては、東京、京都、大阪などの国内主要都市のほか、サンフランシスコ、ニューヨーク、エディンバラなど世界各地で計50回（2023年時点）の個展を開催。また、1988年以降、国内外のグループ展へ継続的に出品するなど精力的な活動を展開してきました。受賞歴として、京都市芸術新人賞（1995年）、スコットランド・アニュアルでのアートクラブ賞（1999年）などがあります。作品は、町田市立国際版画美術館や徳島県立近代美術館をはじめ、ワシントンDC国会図書館など国内外の公共機関に収蔵されています。

武蔵は、直接表現としての「絵画」と、間接表現の「版画」という2つの領域を行き来しながら、写真技術の可能性にも着目して制作を行ってきました。絵画の持つさまざまな役割の中でも「何かを伝える器」である点に重きを置き、現代社会の喧騒から離れて、穏やかで快い自然の中に佇むような視覚体験を提示するため、筆致を層（レイヤー）のように重ねて描いています。

版画においては、従来の技法と先端技術を融合させてきました。具体的には、水と油の反発を利用するリトグラフ、ウォータレスリトグラフ、コラグラフといった版画技法のほか、独自に研究開発したポリマー版によるフォトエッチング、インクジェットプリントなどを駆使しています。近年では、自身の原点である石版画に回帰しました。プリンター（刷り担当）として教え子でもあるリトグラファーの衣川泰典を迎えて、ドローイングのような自由度と多層的な石版画表現を追求しています。

Musashi was born in 1952 in Kyoto, where he continues to reside today. After graduating from the University of Washington’s School of Art in 1977, he earned his Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1979. In 1988, he joined the printmaking department at Kyoto Seika University as an educator, later serving as a Professor in the Department of Fine Arts from 2001. Over a distinguished 33-year teaching career, he led the lithography seminar, colloquially known as "Litho-Zemi," profoundly influencing students exploring everything from traditional planographic techniques to mixed media. Currently, he is a Professor Emeritus at the university and remains an active member of the Japan Print Association and the Japan Artists Association.

As an artist, Musashi has held a total of 50 solo exhibitions (as of 2023) in major Japanese cities including Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, as well as international locations such as San Francisco, New York, and Edinburgh. Since 1988, he has maintained a prolific presence in numerous group exhibitions both domestically and abroad. His accolades include the Kyoto City New Artist Prize (1995) and the Art Club Prize at the Scottish Annual (1999). His works are held in the permanent collections of public institutions worldwide, including the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts, the Tokushima Modern Art Museum, and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

Musashi’s practice navigates the realms of "painting" as direct expression and "printmaking" as indirect expression, while also incorporating the possibilities of photographic technology. He views painting primarily as a "vessel for communication." To offer a visual experience akin to standing in serene, pleasant nature—away from the clamour of modern society—he builds his compositions by layering brushstrokes.

In his printmaking, Musashi has long fused traditional techniques with cutting-edge technology. His repertoire includes lithography, waterless lithography, and collagraphy, alongside inkjet printing and photo-etching using polymer plates he developed through his own research. In recent years, he has returned to his roots in stone lithography. Collaborating with his former student and master printer Yasunori Kinukawa, Musashi continues to pursue a multifaceted lithographic expression that retains the spontaneous freedom of drawing.
